Getting braces is an exciting time, but we also understand it can be a little nerve-wracking as well. At Jarosz & Valente Orthodontics, we will ensure you are ready for your orthodontic treatment, know what to expect, and know what to do if a problem arises. We work with patients on an individual basis to make sure they receive the orthodontic care they need and deserve. Whether you are getting ceramic braces or metal braces in Arlington Heights or Deerfield, you can feel confident choosing Jarosz & Valente Orthodontics for your orthodontic treatment! Here are 5 tips to make it through your first week with braces.

1. Manage General Soreness

During your first day with braces, you will probably experience some soreness and discomfort. To manage the pain, our orthodontists recommend taking over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen as per the package's instructions. You can also use warm water and salt rinse to help soothe any soreness in your mouth.

2. Stick to a Soft Diet

Jarosz & Valente Orthodontics recommend eating a soft diet that is easily chewed and will not put additional strain on your teeth and braces. Most of our patients have found that pudding, soft vegetables, soup, smoothies, ice cream, and mashed potatoes are all good options. We recommend soft food for the first few meals/days then gradually working up to “regular” food when you feel able.

3. Keep Up Your Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is crucial with braces! Prior to even leaving the orthodontist’s office, we will discuss how to brush and floss with your new hardware. Our team will also give you some orthodontic wax to help alleviate sore spots on your cheeks, gums, and tongue from the new metal in your mouth. We recommend brushing 3 times per day if possible—after breakfast, after school, before going to bed and yes-floss at least once per day.

4. Water Can Help

Braces and wires are easy traps for food to get stuck in, even if you are sticking to a soft diet. Water is a great tool not only for hydrating your body, but also to quickly rinse out your mouth and braces. Our orthodontists recommend carrying a water bottle with you at all times.

5. Treat Yourself

We understand that braces are an adjustment and they may not be super comfortable during the first week. While we don’t recommend overindulging in sugar, you can treat yourself to an ice cream or two. Not only will the ice cream be easy to eat, but the frozen texture will also help alleviate any soreness from your braces!
