Braces

Quality Orthodontic Treatment from Your Arlington Heights Orthodontist

With the many advances made in orthodontic technology, patients now have more options than ever when it comes to braces and orthodontic treatment. While traditional metal braces are still an ever-popular choice among patients, clear braces, lingual braces, and self-ligating braces are becoming increasingly popular choices, along with clear appliances.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are made of translucent (clear) ceramic material. They have grown increasingly popular among adult orthodontic patients thanks to their ability to offer a discreet treatment. However, ceramic brackets are more fragile than their metal counterparts, and the elastic ties can discolor between orthodontic visits, making them become slightly more conspicuous.

Mini-Twin Brackets

The Mini-Twin bracket needs fewer archwires over the course of treatment than standard brackets, which increases overall comfort for the patient. Many patients enjoy the smaller, more compact size of the bracket, which enables it to be less noticeable, but no less effective. While its profile is up to 30% smaller than its competition, Mini-Twin maintains the standard size for its bracket slots, which enables it to maintain the stability and control so important to the orthodontic treatment process.

Other Appliances:

Rapid Palatal Expander

Attached to the upper molars through bonding or by cemented bands, the Rapid Palatal Expander is an orthodontic device used to create a wider space in the upper jaw. It is typically used when the upper jaw is too narrow for the lower jaw, or when the upper teeth are crowded or blocked out of the dental arch.

When patients are still growing, their connective tissue between the left and right halves of their upper jaw is very responsive to expansion. By simply activating the expander through turning a screw in the center of the palatal expander using a special key provided by your Arlington Heights orthodontist, gradual outward pressure is placed on the left and right halves of the upper jaw. This pressure causes an increased amount of bone to grow between the right and left halves of the jaw, ultimately resulting in an increased width, which can aid in the proper alignment of teeth.
