Braces & Invisalign in Arlington Heights, IL

At Jarosz & Valente Orthodontics, we believe everyone deserves a healthy, beautiful smile – and our mission is to help you achieve one. As a leading orthodontic practice serving Arlington Heights, Deerfield, and the surrounding areas, we're proud to offer treatments ranging from metal braces to ClearCorrect clear aligners, and we work hard to personalize treatment to fit each patient's unique lifestyle. But no matter which form of orthodontic treatment you and your Deerfield orthodontist choose, there's an important step you'll need to complete after the active phase of your treatment: retention.

Why Do I Need to Wear a Retainer?

When you finally get your braces off, we know you'll be excited. And with good reason: you've achieved your gorgeous new smile! But you're not quite out of the woods yet, as you'll now enter the retention phase of treatment, which is crucial to the long-term health of your smile.

Retention is necessary because while your teeth will be in new positions at the end of orthodontic treatment, the tissues and ligaments that support your teeth will have yet to adjust to these new positions. Left to their own devices, your teeth would actually drift back towards their old positions, erasing your new smile! Wearing a retainer serves to hold your teeth in place long enough for your mouth to adapt to your new smile, setting it in place for a lifetime.

Wearing & Caring for Your Retainers

During retention, it's absolutely critical that you wear your retainers for as many hours as is directed, each and every day. This is the only way to ensure your teeth don't regress to their old positions. Retainers are fragile and costly to replace, so you'll want to take good care of them.

To prevent losing or breaking your retainers, we always tell patients that their retainers should only ever be in one of two places: either in your mouth or in the specialized case we provide for you. You should brush your retainers with toothpaste every time you remove them in order to keep them clean, and we also recommend periodically soaking them in a glass of water with a denture cleaning tablet. With diligent use and care, your retainers will ensure that your new smile lasts a lifetime!
